BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., May 28, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- smart USA Distributor LLC, a subsidiary of Penske Automotive Group, Inc., (NYSE: PAG), announced today its headquarters and smart center Bloomfield dealership in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, have been awarded LEED(R) Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED(R) certification was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project and the broader community. LEED(R) is the USGBC's lead rating system related to the design and construction of energy-efficient buildings.

smart USA's headquarters and its only Michigan dealership, smart center Bloomfield (, are co-located at 1765 Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Hills. The building was designed to achieve LEED(R) certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable, environmentally friendly strategies.

"Having our facility registered as a LEED(R) Silver certified building is a tremendous honor for smart USA," said Dave Schembri, President, smart USA. "It complements the environmental friendliness of the smart brand and further establishes smart USA as an innovator in the field of automotive distribution and retailing."

The Bloomfield Hills-based dealership and headquarters were recently recognized by the township with a resolution honoring its LEED(R) certification, as these facilities were built based on a number of green design and construction features that highlight the company's commitment to the environment, including:

  • The building's roofing system includes material with high solar reflectance value to minimize thermal gradient difference to reduce heat gain around the building's mechanical equipment to optimize performance.
  • The building is constructed to use 40% less water than similar structures that maintain the same occupancy through low flow fixtures and sensors.
  • The project used more than 47% of its materials from regional resources to reduce pollution from transporting materials and to support regional economies; over 80% of all construction was diverted away from landfills to recycling.
  • 100% of the building's electricity usage was purchased from renewable resources through a two-year renewable contract.
  • 90% of all equipment and appliances are ENERGY STAR compliant to reduce power demand.
  • To improve indoor air quality, all paints, carpet systems, adhesives and sealants, composite wood and Agrifiber products have been specified to be low-VOC.

"The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The work of innovative building projects such as smart USA is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement."
